Is Invisalign worth it?

Invisalign is worth it for many people, but not for everyone. It usually costs about the same as braces, it works well for mild to moderate problems, and it only works if you wear the aligners almost all day. Whether it's worth it for you depends on your teeth, your habits and the quotes you get. Here is what the price data and the research say.

Key points

  • Typical price: $4,000 to $7,000 for clear aligners, against $3,000 to $7,000 for metal braces (CareCredit)
  • Align says Invisalign costs about the same as braces in many cases (Invisalign.com)
  • Research finds both work; braces do better on some harder tooth movements (Ke et al., BMC Oral Health)
  • Aligners need to be worn at least 22 hours a day (AAO)

Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?

Not by much, and sometimes not at all. CareCredit's typical range for clear aligners starts higher than metal braces but tops out at the same $7,000 (CareCredit). Its 2024 averages put clear aligners at $5,108 and metal braces at $6,343 (CareCredit). An average covers every kind of case, so it isn't a like-for-like price for your teeth, but it does show aligners aren't automatically the expensive option. Align, which makes Invisalign, says that in many cases Invisalign costs about the same as braces (Invisalign.com).

Where a lot of the fee goes: in 2025, Align's average selling price was about $1,245 per clear aligner case shipped to providers (Align Technology 10-K). The rest of what you pay covers the orthodontist's exam, planning, visits and running costs. See why braces are so expensive, or get an estimate for your state with the Invisalign cost calculator.

Does Invisalign work as well as braces?

The AAO says one appliance is not inherently better than another, and that the skill of the person providing treatment matters far more than the type of appliance (AAO). The research points the same way, with some limits:

  • A 2019 review of 8 studies, two of them randomized trials, found both clear aligners and braces effective. Aligners did better at moving segments of teeth and treatment was about 6 months shorter on average, but they were not as effective as braces at producing good bite contacts, controlling tooth torque and retention (Ke et al., BMC Oral Health). Most patients in those studies didn't have teeth removed (Ke et al., BMC Oral Health).
  • A 2023 review of 6 studies (283 patients) looked at more complex cases where premolars were removed. Both worked, but braces gave better tooth angles and bite contacts in a shorter time, and aligner results sometimes differed from the planned movements (Jaber et al., Cureus).

Cleveland Clinic says aligners treat some types of mild to moderate malocclusion and aren't an option for everyone, and that traditional braces may fix problems more quickly (Cleveland Clinic). Healthline notes research suggesting aligners may not be as helpful for more severe bite problems (Healthline).

When Invisalign is worth it

  • Your problem is mild to moderate, such as crowding or spacing (Healthline), and your orthodontist says aligners suit your case (Cleveland Clinic)
  • You'll wear them. At least 22 hours a day, in the right order (AAO)
  • Appearance matters to you. Aligners are designed to be hard to notice, and you can take them out for short periods for work or social occasions (AAO)
  • You want fewer food rules. You take them out to eat, so there are generally fewer restrictions and cleaning routines than with braces (Cleveland Clinic)
  • The quote is close to braces. If the price difference where you live is small, the trade-off is mostly about comfort and habits

When braces may be the better buy

  • Complex or severe cases. Aligners may be less helpful for severe bite problems (Healthline), and in the 2023 review braces were faster in extraction cases (Jaber et al., Cureus)
  • You might not keep them in. Clear aligner treatment requires discipline (Cleveland Clinic); braces can't be left in a drawer
  • You tend to lose things. Removable aligners can be lost or damaged, even wrapped in a napkin and thrown away (AAO)
  • You have bridgework, which Healthline says may rule Invisalign out (Healthline)

Braces can treat most orthodontic problems (AAO). Compare both in Invisalign vs braces cost.

Costs people miss

  • Extra aligners. Ask whether refinement sets are included if your teeth don't track the plan
  • Lost or broken aligners. Ask what a replacement costs; with aligners out of your mouth for meals, the risk is real (AAO)
  • Retainers. Teeth are especially prone to moving in the first months after treatment (AAO); a clear plastic retainer averaged $181 in 2024 (CareCredit). See retainer cost

The AAO advises asking what any orthodontic fee includes before you start (AAO).

Does insurance change the answer?

It can make Invisalign cheaper than you expect. Dental plans that cover orthodontics generally cover Invisalign in the same way as braces, depending on the plan (Invisalign.com). In OrthoFi data for 2021 on 112,243 insured US patients, the orthodontic benefit averaged $1,772 (Align Technology). Align also lists FSAs and HSAs as ways to pay with pre-tax money (Invisalign.com). More in does insurance cover Invisalign.

Questions to ask before you decide

  • Is my case a good fit for aligners, or would braces get a better result?
  • What would the same treatment cost with braces, and with Invisalign?
  • How long will each take for my teeth?
  • Does the fee include refinements, replacement aligners and retainers?
  • What happens if I don't wear the aligners enough?

Most AAO orthodontists offer the first consultation free or at low cost (AAO), so getting both quotes is cheap; see free orthodontic consultations. See also how much Invisalign costs.

Questions people ask

Is Invisalign worth the money?

It can be if your case is mild to moderate, you'll wear the aligners about 22 hours a day, and it costs about the same as braces where you live. Align says that in many cases Invisalign costs about the same as braces.

Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?

Not necessarily. CareCredit's typical range for clear aligners is $4,000 to $7,000, against $3,000 to $7,000 for metal braces (2022 data), and its 2024 average was $5,108 for aligners and $6,343 for metal braces.

Does Invisalign work as well as braces?

For many cases, yes. A 2019 review of eight studies found both effective, but aligners were less effective than braces at producing good bite contacts, controlling tooth torque and retention. The AAO says neither appliance is inherently better; the orthodontist's skill matters more.

Is Invisalign faster than braces?

It depends on the case. A 2019 review found shorter treatment with aligners, mostly in cases without extractions, while a 2023 review of cases with premolar extractions found braces were faster.

Who shouldn't get Invisalign?

People who won't wear aligners about 22 hours a day, those with complex or severe bite problems, and people prone to losing things. Healthline adds that someone with bridgework may not be a good candidate.
