How insurance pays during treatment

Orthodontic benefits are often paid in installments, not all at once. In one Delta Dental of Virginia example, a plan with 50% coverage and a $2,500 lifetime maximum paid $500 when the braces went on, then $57.14 a month until the maximum was reached (Delta Dental of Virginia). Ask your orthodontist's office how they apply insurance payments to your monthly bill.

Before you agree to a plan

  • Ask if the in-house plan is interest-free. Most in-house plans charge no interest; third-party financing may (AAO).
  • Check for a pay-in-full discount and compare it with the plan (AAO).
  • Find out what happens if treatment takes longer than planned.
  • If you have an HSA or FSA, braces count as a dental expense when they treat a dental problem (IRS Publication 502).
