How much braces cost for adults
Adults pay the same broad range as teens, $3,000 to $7,000 for metal braces, and usually slightly more, because treatment can take longer. Adults are also less likely to have insurance that helps, so how you pay matters as much as the price.
Key points
- About one in three orthodontic patients is an adult (AAO)
- Adult braces usually cost slightly more than children's (Healthline)
- Most dental plans don't cover adult braces; some offer an add-on orthodontic plan (Healthline)
- Average adult treatment time is about 19.9 months, according to a 2018 review cited by Healthline (Healthline)
Why more adults are getting braces
Orthodontic treatment works for adults as well as for children, because healthy teeth can be moved at any age by the same process (AAO). The AAO says the number of adults seeing an orthodontist is at an all-time high, and that while appearance remains the top reason, more adults now cite the health benefits (AAO). Leaving misaligned teeth untreated may lead to tooth decay, gum disease, abnormal wear of tooth enamel and difficulty chewing (AAO).
You don't need a referral from your dentist to see an orthodontist (AAO), and most AAO orthodontists offer low-cost or free first consultations (AAO).
How adult treatment differs, and what it means for cost
- Slower tooth movement. Adult bone has finished growing, so movement is slower and treatment can take slightly longer (AAO). Cleveland Clinic agrees adult braces are just as effective but may take a little longer (Cleveland Clinic). Longer treatment tends to mean a higher fee, which is why our calculator places adults a little higher in the range.
- Existing dental work. Adults often have fillings, missing teeth or gum concerns that must be stabilized first (AAO). Any active decay, gum disease or unstable restorations should be treated before orthodontics starts, which can add to the total cost.
- Some problems need more than braces. Some skeletal problems in adults may need surgical or restorative treatment combined with orthodontics (AAO). That changes the price entirely; ask what your plan involves.
- Short touch-ups are possible. Depending on the case, a short-term touch-up can take as little as several months, while comprehensive treatment takes much longer (AAO).
Which option adults choose, and what each costs
Adults tend to prioritize discreet options such as clear aligners, ceramic or clear brackets, or lingual braces (AAO). Those all cost more than metal at the low end:
| Option | Typical price (2022) | Average (2024) | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal braces | $3,000 to $7,000 | $6,343 | Lowest starting price; most visible |
| Ceramic braces | $4,000 to $8,000 | $5,834 | Less noticeable; may especially appeal to adults (AAO) |
| Clear aligners | $4,000 to $7,000 | $5,108 | Removable; worn at least 22 hours a day (AAO) |
| Lingual braces | $8,000 to $10,000 | $9,221 | Hidden behind the teeth; usually the most expensive (AAO) |
Clear aligners only work if worn most of the day, every day, so they suit people who will stick with that. They typically treat light to moderate problems (AAO); an orthodontist can tell you which options suit your teeth. Compare the two most common choices on Invisalign vs braces, and see monthly figures for each type on braces cost per month.
Braces at 40, 50 and beyond
There is no upper age limit. Cleveland Clinic puts it simply: you're never too old for orthodontics (Cleveland Clinic), and the AAO says healthy teeth can be moved at any age (AAO). What changes with age is the preparation: gum health, existing crowns and fillings, and missing teeth all need checking first, and some cases are planned together with a general dentist or periodontist (AAO). Ask the orthodontist whether any of that work is needed and what it would add to the bill.
Braces or aligners: which costs less for adults?
On published figures, they're close. In CareCredit's 2022 ranges, metal braces start at $3,000 and clear aligners at $4,000, with both topping out at $7,000; in its 2024 averages, aligners ($5,108) came in below metal braces ($6,343) (CareCredit). Align says Invisalign is comparable in cost to braces in most cases (Align). So for most adults, the better question is which treatment suits the case and the routine, then which practice offers the best total price for it.
How long adult treatment takes
A 2018 review cited by Healthline put average adult treatment time at about 19.9 months (Healthline). For braces at any age, the AAO says most people wear them for 12 to 24 months (AAO), and adult cases can take slightly longer because bone turns over more slowly (AAO). A minor touch-up can take only several months (AAO). Ask for your expected timeline in writing, because it drives both the fee and how long your payment plan runs.
Insurance for adult braces
This is where adults usually lose out. Most dental insurance plans don't cover braces for adults (Healthline), and dental coverage isn't an essential health benefit for adults, so health plans don't have to offer it (HealthCare.gov). The AAO notes that orthodontic coverage is less common for adults than for children under 18 (AAO).
Some employer plans do include adult orthodontic benefits or an add-on you can choose at open enrollment (AAO). If yours does, check the lifetime maximum and any waiting period; separate dental plans can have waiting periods before they cover adult services, and you pay premiums meanwhile (HealthCare.gov). Where a plan does pay, the benefit is usually far below the price: in OrthoFi data for 2021, orthodontic coverage averaged $1,772 (Align, citing OrthoFi).
Paying for adult braces
- HSA or FSA: braces count as a dental expense when they treat a dental problem (IRS Publication 502). For 2025 you can put up to $3,300 into a health FSA (IRS Publication 969).
- An interest-free in-house plan: typically 12 to 24 months after a down payment (AAO). Check any plan in the payment calculator.
- Be wary of medical credit cards: the typical APR is 26.99%, and deferred-interest promotions charge interest on the full amount if you miss the payoff date (CFPB).
- Ask about discounts for paying in full or for another family member in treatment (AAO).
Before you start
- Have a dental check-up and cleaning first; problems such as cavities may need treating before braces go on (AAO).
- Get a written quote that lists what's included: records, every visit, repairs and retainers.
- Ask how long your treatment is expected to take and whether extra months would cost more.
- Plan for retainers. Everyone needs them after treatment, typically for life (AAO).
- Check whether your employer offers an orthodontic add-on at the next open enrollment (Healthline), and whether it has a waiting period before it pays.
