Invisalign vs braces: cost compared
Clear aligners (Invisalign and others) usually cost $4,000 to $7,000 in the US before insurance. That's similar to metal braces at the top end, and above them at the bottom: metal starts at $3,000.
Key numbers
- Average range: $4,000 to $7,000 (CareCredit data, 2022)
- Average cost in 2024: $5,108 (CareCredit data, 2024)
- Another published range: $3,000 to $7,000 (Healthline, 2021)
- All types of comprehensive treatment, US average: $5,645 (Pearl, May 2026)
Invisalign vs braces, side by side
Clear aligners are a series of thin, custom-made plastic trays. Each set moves the teeth a little, and you switch to the next set about every 2 weeks (Cleveland Clinic). Invisalign is the best-known brand; ClearCorrect is another (Cleveland Clinic). Braces are brackets and wires fixed to the teeth and adjusted at visits every 4 to 12 weeks (AAO).
| Feature | Clear aligners | Metal braces |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price (2022) | $4,000 to $7,000 | $3,000 to $7,000 |
| Average cost (2024) | $5,108 | $6,343 |
| Visibility | Nearly invisible | Visible; ceramic brackets are less noticeable |
| Removable | Yes, but worn at least 22 hours a day | No |
| Eating | Take trays out to eat | Avoid hard, sticky, crunchy and chewy foods |
| Cleaning | Easier; teeth must be clean before trays go back in | Careful brushing and flossing around brackets |
| Discomfort | When switching to new trays; usually easily managed | When placed or adjusted; typically short-lived |
| Cases treated | Typically light to moderate | A wide range, including severe bite problems |
The cost compared
On price, the two are closer than most people expect. In CareCredit's 2022 data, clear aligners cost $4,000 to $7,000 and metal braces $3,000 to $7,000, so aligners start $1,000 higher but top out at the same price (CareCredit). In CareCredit's 2024 averages, aligners ($5,108) actually came in below metal braces ($6,343) (CareCredit). Align, which makes Invisalign, says the cost is comparable to braces in most cases (Align).
So the deciding factor usually isn't price. It's which treatment suits your case and your daily life. For Invisalign prices on their own, see how much Invisalign costs.
What each can fix
The AAO says braces can treat a wide range of bite problems, including very bad bites and very crooked teeth, while clear aligners typically treat light to moderate alignment issues (AAO). Cleveland Clinic says aligners treat crowded or crooked teeth and some types of mild to moderate malocclusion, and aren't an option for everyone (Cleveland Clinic).
The AAO adds that no appliance is inherently better than another: the right choice depends on the diagnosis, the goals of treatment and your lifestyle, and the skill of the person treating you matters far more than the type of appliance (AAO). That's a good reason to be cautious about any option that skips an in-person exam.
How long each takes
Cleveland Clinic says traditional braces may fix dental issues more quickly than aligners, and aligners may need more time and more tray updates to get the same result (Cleveland Clinic). For a few slightly crooked teeth, aligners may be worn for up to 9 months; more serious problems take several months longer (Cleveland Clinic). Across all cases, braces take about 2 years on average (Cleveland Clinic).
Daily life with each
Aligners need discipline. They only work in your mouth: at least 22 hours a day, in the right order (AAO). You take them out to eat, to brush and floss, and briefly for special occasions. The AAO warns against drinking soft drinks, flavored water or sports drinks with aligners in, because the liquid seeps under the trays and can quickly cause staining and decay (AAO).
Braces need care with food. They stay on, so they keep working without any effort from you, but you avoid hard, sticky, crunchy and chewy foods and clean carefully around the brackets (AAO). Some people prefer this: there is nothing to remember and nothing to lose.
Costs people miss
- Lost or broken trays. Because aligners are removable, they are easily lost or damaged; the AAO notes they get thrown away wrapped in napkins (AAO). Ask what a replacement tray costs.
- Repairs to braces. Broken brackets and wires mean extra visits. Ask whether repairs are included (AAO).
- Retainers. Everyone needs retainers after treatment, whatever the appliance (AAO). The first set is often in the fee; replacements may cost extra (AAO).
- Extra time. If aligners need more trays or months to finish, ask whether that is included in the original price.
Insurance, HSA and FSA
If your plan includes orthodontic benefits, it may treat aligners the same as braces. Delta Dental of Virginia says all its plans that cover orthodontic services cover Invisalign (Delta Dental of Virginia), while other plans pay only what metal braces would cost and leave you the difference (Healthline). Either way, benefits stop at a lifetime maximum; in OrthoFi data for 2021, orthodontic coverage averaged $1,772 among insured patients (Align, citing OrthoFi).
Both treatments can usually be paid with HSA or FSA money when they treat a dental problem (IRS Publication 502). For 2025, you can put up to $3,300 into a health FSA, and some plans let up to $660 carry over into the next year (IRS Publication 969).
How to decide
Get a diagnosis first. An orthodontist takes records such as X-rays and photos and explains which options suit your case (AAO). Then compare:
- Will you wear trays at least 22 hours a day, every day? If not, braces are the safer choice.
- Does your case suit aligners, or does it need braces?
- What do both options cost for your case, and what does each quote include?
- How does your insurance pay for each? Some plans pay only the cost of metal braces (Healthline).
Estimate both with the calculator, then switch the treatment type to compare.

Clear aligners costs in your state
Prices follow local living costs. Using 2024 state price levels, the typical price for clear aligners ranges from about $4,800 in Arkansas to $6,100 in California. See every state on braces cost by state, or run the calculator for clear aligners.
Is it worth the price?
In favor
- Nearly invisible and removable for eating, brushing and flossing (AAO)
- Fewer food restrictions than braces, since trays come out to eat (Cleveland Clinic)
- Easier to keep teeth clean (AAO)
With insurance
If your plan covers orthodontics, it typically pays a share of the fee up to a lifetime maximum. At 50% coverage, a $4,000 to $7,000 treatment would leave you about $2,000 to $3,500 if the plan had no maximum. Most plans have one: with a $2,500 lifetime maximum, as in Delta Dental of Virginia's example, you would pay about $2,000 to $4,500. Some plans only pay what standard metal braces would cost and leave you the difference for a pricier option (Healthline). Read more about how orthodontic insurance works.
Questions people ask
Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?
Not necessarily. CareCredit's 2022 ranges are $4,000 to $7,000 for clear aligners and $3,000 to $7,000 for metal braces, and its 2024 averages were $5,108 and $6,343. Align, which makes Invisalign, says the cost is comparable to braces in most cases.
Which is faster, Invisalign or braces?
It depends on the case. Cleveland Clinic says traditional braces may fix dental issues more quickly than aligners. For a few slightly crooked teeth, aligners may take up to 9 months; braces average about 2 years across all cases.
Can Invisalign fix everything braces can?
No. The AAO says braces can treat a wide range of bite problems, while clear aligners typically treat light to moderate alignment issues. An orthodontist decides which suits your case.
How many hours a day do you wear Invisalign?
At least 22 hours a day, according to the AAO. You take aligners out only to eat, drink anything but water, brush and floss.
Does insurance cover Invisalign the same as braces?
Often, if your plan includes orthodontics. Delta Dental of Virginia says all its plans with orthodontic benefits cover Invisalign. Some other plans pay only what metal braces would cost (Healthline).
Are at-home aligners cheaper?
Usually, but they are generally meant for mild cases. An in-person orthodontic exam helps confirm whether they'll work for you.
Which is easier to keep clean?
Aligners. You remove them to brush and floss, while braces need careful cleaning around brackets and wires. But teeth must be spotless before aligners go back in (AAO).
