Invisalign Express: what it is and what it costs
Invisalign Express is Align Technology's shortest Invisalign package, for relapse after earlier treatment and minor tooth movements. It allows up to 7 aligner stages, with one extra set of aligners included within 6 months (Align Technology). Align doesn't publish patient prices; your orthodontist or dentist sets the fee. Here is how Express compares with the other packages, who it suits, and what to ask about cost.
Key points
- Express: up to 7 stages, for relapse, minor movement and front-tooth alignment (Align Technology)
- Express 5: up to 5 stages, for relapse and very minor movement (Align Technology)
- Aligners must be worn about 22 hours a day to work (AAO)
- Clear aligner treatment overall typically costs $4,000 to $7,000 before insurance (CareCredit)
Invisalign packages compared
Align sells Invisalign to doctors in packages that cap how many aligner stages a case can use. Its provider product guide lists (Align Technology):
| Package | Maximum stages | Extra aligners | Intended for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Express 5 | 5 | One set available to buy | Relapse and very minor movement |
| Express | 7 | One set within 6 months | Relapse, minor movement, front-tooth alignment |
| Lite | 14 | One set within 1 year | Mild crowding or spacing, no extractions |
| Moderate | 20 | One set within 2 years | Mild to moderate crowding or spacing, mild bite issues |
| Comprehensive | Unlimited | Unlimited sets within 5 years | Moderate to severe crowding or spacing, bite problems, extractions |
Source: Align Technology, 2026. Align's page notes that additional sets, where not included, cost the doctor $130 per set. Packages and limits can change; ask your provider which one they'd use.
A "stage" is one set of aligners. Each set is worn for about 2 weeks before switching to the next (Cleveland Clinic), so the number of stages largely sets how long treatment lasts.
Who Invisalign Express is for
Express is meant for small corrections (Align Technology):
- Relapse: teeth that have shifted a little after earlier braces or aligners (see if teeth shift after braces)
- Minor movement: a slightly rotated or crowded tooth, or a small gap
- Front-tooth alignment for appearance
Align lists bite corrections, such as front-to-back discrepancies in an overbite or underbite, under its longer Moderate and Comprehensive packages rather than Express (Align Technology); braces are another option. Only an exam can tell you whether your case fits within a few aligners; the orthodontist plans how each tooth will move before treatment (Cleveland Clinic).
How long Invisalign Express takes
With up to 7 stages at about 2 weeks each (Cleveland Clinic), Express treatment is short by orthodontic standards, plus time for the extra set if it's needed. Align's own claim is that treatment for mild to moderate cases can take as little as six months, assuming one week per aligner (Invisalign.com); that's the maker's figure, and your provider sets the actual schedule. How much Invisalign Express costs
We haven't found a published patient price for Invisalign Express, and Align doesn't publish one; the doctor sets the fee. What we can say from sourced figures:
| Figure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Typical clear aligner treatment, before insurance | $4,000 to $7,000 (CareCredit) |
| Wider range in CareCredit's study | $1,800 to $8,100 (CareCredit) |
| Average aligner treatment, 2024 | $5,108 (CareCredit) |
| Align's average revenue per case, all products worldwide, 2025 | $1,245 (Align Technology 10-K) |
CareCredit doesn't break its figures down by package, so we can't say where Express falls in those ranges. The aligners are only part of the fee; the rest covers the exam, scans, planning, check-ups and retainers. See why Invisalign is so expensive.
Ask for a written quote that says which package is planned, whether the extra set is included, and whether retainers are part of the fee. CareCredit's 2024 average for a clear plastic retainer was $181 (CareCredit).
Insurance and paying for Express
Dental plans that cover orthodontics generally cover Invisalign the same way they cover braces, depending on your plan (Invisalign.com). Ask whether your plan covers a short treatment and how it counts toward your lifetime orthodontic maximum. HSA and FSA money can be used for orthodontic treatment (IRS Publication 502). More in does insurance cover Invisalign.
Keeping teeth straight after Express
If you're using Express because teeth moved after earlier treatment, the same thing can happen again. Teeth keep moving throughout life because the bone around them remodels, and right after treatment there's a settling-in period when they're especially prone to moving back (AAO). The AAO's advice is that the only sure way to keep teeth in place is to wear your retainer, and that you'll likely need one for life (AAO). Skipping it for even a few days can let teeth shift significantly (AAO). Budget for retainers as part of the treatment; see how much a retainer costs.
Questions to ask your provider
- Which Invisalign package do you plan to use, and why?
- What happens if my teeth need more aligners than the package allows?
- Is the extra set of aligners included in the fee?
- Are retainers included, and how long will I need to wear them?
Many orthodontists offer a free first consultation (AAO). Estimate a full aligner fee for your state with the Invisalign cost calculator.
